Gulay Ozkan of GEDS has been invited as a member of the Advisory Board of SXSW – Place by Design Awards.
As you may know, SXSW is a super influential brand that is founded in 1987 in Austin, Texas, best known for its conference and festivals that celebrate the convergence of the interactive, film, and music industries. The name of the brand originates from a famous movie North by Northwest by Alfred Hitchcock.
There have been many famous speakers included politicians, singers, legends such as Johnny Cash, Mark Zuckerberg, Mike Tyson, Kanye West, Elon Musk, Julian Assange, Lady Gaga, and Barack Obama in the history of the festival.
SXSW has different impacts in different areas. As an example, its economic impact is non-negligible. SXSW is the highest revenue-producing event outside of athletic and other events associated with The University of Texas at Austin for the Austin economy, with an estimated economic impact of $190.3 million in 2012 increasing to $325 million in 2016. (In comparison, Super Bowl LI brought a $347 million economic impact to the Houston economy.)
Place by Design Awards is an exciting public space design competition brought by SXSW. In 2019 there were mind-opening winner projects such as; Micro. MICRO is building a new museum model that everyone can access. MICRO’s fleet of six-foot-tall science museums meets visitors in their daily lives, transforming unexpected public spaces from transit hubs to hospital waiting rooms into places of interaction, insight, and play.
Besides, Place by Design is open to all kinds of design work that rethinks, enhances or transforms public space. This consists of emerging technologies, urban interventions, public art, and architecture but it is not limited to these. Finalists are determined by the degree of the social impact their work has on the community.
After all, as GEDS, we invite artists, architects, urbanists, and designers to participate in Place by Design Competition. So, we welcome you to be part of this impressive competition to reveal your inspirational work to the world. Please contact us for a submission fee waiver.
